Dhanpat Rai Srivastav, popularly known by his pen name Prem Chand was an Indian writer. Munshi Prem Chand was a pioneer of Hindi and Urdu social fiction. He was probably the first writer to write about caste hierarchies and the plights of women and laborers prevalent in the society of the late 1880s.

Munshi Prem Chand was born on July 31, 1880, in Lamhi, a village located in Varanasi district, in the Indian State of Banaras. Prem Chand was one of the most celebrated writers of the Indian subcontinent. He is considered one of the foremost Hindi writers of the early twentieth century. One of his most popular works is Godaan, Karmabhoomi, Gaban, Mansarovar, "Idgah". He published his first collection of five short stories in 1907 in a book called Soz-e-Watan.
