20 Million Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej Banknotes Sold Within Hours

The 70th anniversary of the reign of Thailand‘s King Bhumibol Adulyadej was celebrated by The Bank of Thailand with the release of 20 million 70-baht commemorative bank notes. The note was such a huge hit that all of it was sold out within hours. The announcement about the new notes was made on 30th June and the sale began on 9th June.The notes were being sold for 100 baht and a portion of the additional income was used as proceeds towards a presentation for the king. 1 person was allowed to buy two notes each. Some experts have stated that dealers have bought large quantity of these notes and have sold it in the secondary market for 120 to 130 Baht.
The obverse depicts the king wearing the uniform of the supreme commander of the Armed Forces. The reverse pictures a younger king holding the Sword of Victory in front of the throne.

The portraits are made using intaglio printing for the visually impaired. Glitter ink is used for showing the Thai denomination. Colour-shifting ink in the Arabic numeral “70” changes from gold to green when tilted. A hidden numeral “70” on the obverse can be seen only when the note is viewed from a certain angle. Fluorescent ink is used for the radial pattern which glows under ultraviolet light.
