Tyagaraja, also known as Tyagayya, was a composer and vocalist of Carnatic music. He is the most prominent person; in the history of southern Indian classical music. He composed thousands of devotional compositions, most in Telugu and praise of Lord Rama, many of which remain popular today.He played a vital role in the development of the musical genre. Most of the Tyagaraja songs were in praise of Rama, who, like Krishna, is believed to be an incarnation of the god Vishnu. Thyagaraja is most indisputably; and the most celebrated poet-composer and singer in Carnatic music.
The commemorative stamp was issued in 1961 to commemorate him and his work.
