Chandragupta Maurya was the founder of the Maurya Empire during an ancient period in India. Under the mentor and guides of his teacher Chanakya or Kautilya, he set up the Maurya Empire, whose functioning, society, military, and economy, are well preserved in Kautilya's Arthashastra. Chandragupta Maurya is the key figure in the history of India.
Chandragupta Maurya destroyed the Nanda Empire and established Maurya Empire. He also defeated the Macedonian satrapies in the northwest of the Indian subcontinent. He extended his kingdom from modern-day Bengal to Afghanistan across North India as well as making inroads into Central and South India.
