One of the main reasons was to include the Zulu population for labor work in the diamond fields of Southern Africa. British Empire wanted to create a South Africa federation in the region and Boer land claim on the territories held by the Zulu kingdom. Cetshwayo, king of Zulus, was unwilling to submit his army to British hegemony.
In December 1978, Sir Bartle Frere, A British high commissioner for South Africa ask Cetshwayo to dismantle his military system within 30 days and pay reparations for alleged insults.
