U.S Mint’s First Palladium Coins Might not be Released this Year
2016-07-02 Sat
Officials have stated on 27th June that the American Eagle, High Relief 1-ounce $25 palladium bullion coin might not be released in 2016. Experts believe that the release of palladium coins would be a success only if a good network of vendors providing planchets as per Mint specifications is in place. This will ensure that the supply-chain is maintained. The dimensions of the planchet are being finalized before they are shared with vendors. Officials are ensuring that the dimensions of the coin are good enough for producing high relief coins.
Many years ago the Mint had bought palladium blanks from Goldcorp which were basically used for test strikes. But since these blanks are not produced to the Mint Specifications that is required for the new release, they cannot be used.
The U.S Mint is in talks with the Royal Canadian Mint which has already released palladium coins. They have also spoken to potential palladium blank vendors at the World Money Fair in Berlin, earlier this year.
The idea of minting palladium coins was given a push after a study in 2012 revealed that bullion coins would not make as much profit as Proof and collector versions.
