David Feldman conducted Spring Auction Series 2001 on June 14-19. During this sale over 5600 lots were offered with the impressive sections including Austria, Belgium, China and Japan with foreign P.O’s Egypt, France and French colonies, Latin America with significant Brazil and Uruguay, Persia, Russia, as well as Great Britain and the British Empire.

The most outstanding lot that appeared at this sale was the 1861 woodblock 1d vermilion mint block of four that is considered as one of the most significant and valuable items in South Arica Philately. The auction house describes this lot as featuring ‘Virtually full original gum, one side just cut into, some creases and minor toning, lovely fresh colour, a stunning multiple and a unique mint block’. You won’t find this block in some of the most important collections of Cape as it appears on the market rarely. This time 1861 Woodblock 1d vermilion mint block of four managed to achieve GBP 120,000 or roughly $166,201.
