Charles Darwin presents a paper on his theory of evolution to the Linnean Society in London on 1st July in 1858!Charles Robert Darwin was an English naturalist and geologist famous for his theory of evolution. He later published his theory with compelling evidence in 1859 in his book On the Origin of Species.
The theory of human evolution, in a nutshell, claims that modern day humans have originated or evolved from our ape-like ancestors for over a period of approximately six million years.
Darwin was a prolific writer and during his lifetime he published many books and wrote thousands of letters commenting on various aspects of biology and geology. He has also made groundbreaking contributions to geology, animal behaviour, soil science, and experimental botany.
Portraits of Charles Darwin have been appearing on postage stamps, coins and banknotes of many countries since 1936. Ecuador was the first to issue a stamp in his honour.
On 18th May 1983 India Post had issued an INR 2 stamp to commemorate this legendary geologist. Charles Darwin also appears on 10-pound banknotes of England.
In 2009, Falkland Islands issued commemorative stamps to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the publication of “On the Origin of Species”.
