The Bank Negara Malaysia issued 1 Malaysian Ringgit banknotes in 2012. The word ‘ ringgit ’ is used to refer to the serrated edges of silver Spanish dollars. It was widely circulated in Portuguese colonial areas.This note comes in the fourth series of banknotes. The Fourth series carry a theme called ‘Distinctively Malaysia’ and are inspired by motifs of flora and fauna of various cultures in Malaysia which reflects the diversity and richness of Malaysia's national identity. It also expresses the notion of the Malaysian moving economy. The edges of the banknote feature the traditional Malay textile handicraft and embroidery.
The bright blue polymer plastic banknote of 1 Malaysian Ringgit’s front-side features Malaysia’s first Supreme Head of State, Abdul Rahman of Negeri Sembilan, as well as a red Hibiscus or rosa-Sinensis, the national flower of Malaysia.
