Archaeologists Discover Gold Coins and Skeletons in Pompeii
2016-06-30 Thu
Pompeii tells a heartbreaking story that archaeologists today are trying to convey to the world. This ancient Roman town was nestled at the foot of the volcano, Mount Vesuvius. The eruption in 79 CE wiped out this flourishing town. While excavating an ancient shop on the outskirts of the town, French and Italian archaeologists recently discovered gold coins along with four skeletons in the ruins. The skeletons are of young people, including an adolescent girl, all of whom perished when Vesuvius erupted.
Lying scattered among the remains were three gold coins and a pendant. The excavated shop seemed to have a workshop with an oven that archaeologists think was used to make bronze objects. Officials said that the shop has been ransacked over time by diggers who were probably looking for "treasure" buried under the volcanic ash. Luckily, the coins and the flower-shaped gold-leaf-foil pendant escaped their notice.
