Syria is home to one of the oldest civilizations in the world, with a rich artistic and cultural heritage. From its ancient roots to its recent political instability and the Syrian Civil War, the country has a complex and, at times, tumultuous history. Few historical artifacts are featured on the 1000 libras.

The banknote depicts Roman Theatre at Palmyra on the obverse. The monument is a Roman time theatre built in the Syrian Desert which is unfinished theatre dates back to the second-century CE Severan period. The reverse of the banknote depicts Ceramic tile mosaic of grape harvesting from ancient Roman ruins in As-Suwayda along with branches of olive trees and lintels with ornamental designs.

When the Roman Empire fell, Syria became part of the Eastern or Byzantine Empire. In 637 A.D., Muslim armies defeated the Byzantine Empire and took control of Syria. The Islamic religion spread quickly throughout the region, and its different factions rose to power.
