The country is located on the eastern side of the Indochinese Peninsula. Vietnam shares borders with China to the north, Laos, and Cambodia to the west and maintains maritime borders with Thailand through the Gulf of Thailand, and the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia through the South China Sea. Its capital is Hanoi and its largest city is Saigon. The term ‘Vietnam’ can be traced back to the Trieu dynasty in 2 BCE.The State Bank of Vietnam started issuing 1000 Vietnamese Dong banknotes in 1988. They were withdrawn from circulation in 2006. The 1000 Dong has the portrait of Ho Chi Minh on the front side and shows an elephant pulling lumber on the backside. The translated legends such as ‘Socialist Republic of Vietnam; The State Bank of Vietnam; and One Thousand Dong’ are found on the note.
