The dalasi is the currency of the Gambia and it was adopted in 1971. It is further subdivided into 100 bututs. Dalasi replaced the Gambian pound at a rate of 1 pound which is equal to 5 dalasis, or 1 dalasi equal to 0.2 pound and equivalent to 4 shillings.

The currency name Dalasi derives from dala which was a nickname of the 5 French West African franc note and butut is from Wolof butut that means a small thing.

The 5 dalasi note of Gambia depicts Kingfisher bird, a portrait of Dr. Yahya Abdul-Aziz Jemus Junkung Jammeh on the front side, and a farming scenario where farmers are tilling the land, cattle, and palm tree on the backside. The letterings on the note are, ‘CENTRAL BANK OF THE GAMBIA; PROMISE TO PAY ON DEMAND THE SUM OF FIVE DALASIS; GOVERNOR; FIRST DEPUTY GOVERNOR; DR. ALH. YAHYA A. J. JAMMEH’.
