Rajarshi Shahu Chhatrapati Commemorative Stamp

Rajarshi Shahu Chhatrapati, popularly known as Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, was the Maharaj of the Bhonsle dynasty. He was the first Maharaja of the Indian Princely State of Kolhapur. He was the ruler with a broad vision; brought many changes in society. Shahu Maharaj was an able ruler who was associated with many progressive policies during his rule.During British rule in India, he worked for Justice for the common people in India; he also worked for the upliftment of the backward class in India. During his rule, he also promotes inter-caste and inter-religious marriage. He passes ‘Legal Sanction to Inter-caste and Inter-religion Marriage Act in1919. This step is considered; as one of the most courageous moves bringing reform in the society. Once he said “I am the man of no caste and I will certainly encourage such things..”.
This commemorative stamp was issued by India in 1979, to commemorate him and his work.
