Kingdom of Macedonia

The Kingdom of Macedonia was an ancient kingdom of Macedonia between the 7th Century BC and 2nd Century BC. The term Macedonia; is derived from the ancient Greek word ‘Makednos’. Macedonia is also known as Macedon; it was an ancient kingdom of Greek; founded and ruled by the royal Argead dynasty, which was followed; by the Antipatrid and Antigonid dynasties.

Before the 4th Century BC, Macedonian was a small kingdom in the great city-state of Athens, Sparta, and Thebes. During the reign of Philip II, they dominated ancient Greece and the Thracian Odrysian Kingdom through conquest and diplomacy. Between 275 BC and 205 BC the kingdom of Macedonia was involved in a series of a military campaigns by its kings.

This silver Tetradrachm that weighs around 17.06g, was issued by King Philip III during his rule. The obverse of this coin depicts the bust of the young Herakles facing towards the right wearing lion’s skin. The reverse of this coin depicts Zeus sitting on a throne facing towards the left, holding an eagle and scepter.
