Rani Durgawati was the Queen of Gondwana from 1550 CE until her death 1564CE. She was born on October 5, 1524CE in the family of Chandel Rajput king Keerat Rai at the fort of Kalinjar in Banda district of U.P. The Chandel Dynasty is famous in Indian History for the valiant king Vidyadhar who repulsed the attacks of Mehmood Gaznavi. During the 16th Century, Chandella's power decline, and the area around Kalinjar remained the original Chandella kingdom. In 1556, Rani Durgawati was successful in saving her kingdom from the attack of Malwa Sultan Baz Bahadur. She played an important role when Mughal general Asaf Khan attacked her kingdom in the year 1564. She was severely injured in the battle by two arrows; one arrow stab near her ear and the other her neck. Instead of getting caught in the hands of the Mughal army, she killed herself, taking out the dragger and plugged it into herself. Even today her martyrdom day 24th June 1564 is celebrated as ‘Balidan Divas.
