Since 1899, Sudan has been a joint British-Egyptian territory. Before 1955, however, the government under Ismail al-Azhari had temporarily halted Sudan's progress toward self-determination, hoping to promote unity with Egypt.

On 1 January 1956, the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan gained independence as the Republic of the Sudan. As a celebration of the newly achieved independence, Sudanese Post issued a set of three stamps. The stamps were issued after a couple of months letter i.e. in September 1956. These set of three stamps depict winged map of the country denoting freedom with a sun at the top.

The stamps were issued with the denominations of 15 milims, 3 piastres and 5 piastres and are inscribed with “Jumhuriyat as-Sudan” at the top in Arabic and Sudan with “Independence Day (1st Jan 1956) belo at the bottom of the stamp. The denomination value both in Arabic and English flanks the map of the country.
