Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev was a Soviet leader; he was the first secretary of the Soviet Party since 1964. He was the leader of Nikita Khrushchev’s protege and deputy in the early 1960s. He serves as a leader of the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War from 1964 to 1982, for almost 18 years. During WWII he was drafted into the army where he was a political officer.

During WWII he came into contact with Nikita Khrushchev, a powerful member of the party. For the next several years Leonid Brezhnev rose to the power in the Communist Party. He supported Khrushchev until 1964, later when Khrushchev was removed from power and Brezhnev became the General Secretary of Central Committee and leader of Soviet Union.
