The story of Maratha Expansion and rise of Jhansi. The Peshwas expanded the boundaries of the empire right from Attock on the banks of Indus near Peshawar and the central region of Gwalior, Rajputana and Malwa to parts of the Deccan. The Peshwas got ‘Balwant Nagar’ ( the old name of Jhansi) as a bequest.

Maratha general Peshwa Baji Rao I developed the city of Jhansi and peopled the city with the inhabitants from Orchha state. Rani Laxmi bai or Rani of Jhansi born on 19th November, 1828, was the queen of Maratha ruled Jhansi state. She fought against the British in First war Of Independence.

Jhansi was known as Balwant Nagar during Mughal-Maratha period. Silver rupees of identical design in the name of various Mughal rulers were issued by princely state of Jhansi. Here is one such coin.
