International Yoga Day Commemorative Stamps Released

Yoga is a powerful ancient practice which unites the body, mind and the soul. Though Yoga originated in India almost 5000 years back, it has been widely accepted worldwide today. This holistic approach helps in improving one’s well-being by creating harmony between man and nature, by enhancing self-consciousness and by adopting a healthy lifestyle.21st June being the Summer Solstice, the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, it has a special importance across the globe. On 11th December 2014, United Nations General Assembly declared 21st June as International Yoga Day. The first International Yoga Day was celebrated in 2015 and a special stamp along with a first day cover was released by India Post.
As we inch closer to this significant day in 2016, Honourable Prime Minister, Shree Narendra Modi along with other esteemed delegates launched another set of commemorative stamps and a special cover dedicated to the most widely practiced aasana, the Surya Namaskara. Surya Namaskar is a set of 12 postures which is performed during sunrise. It improves circulation of blood, maintains health and heightens resistance to diseases. It not only increases strength but also improves the functioning of the heart, liver, intestine, stomach, chest and throat.
