Samuel Houston was an American General, Lawyer, congressman, Senator and one of the most important leaders of the Texas Revolution. He was the first and the third president of Texas and was one of the first two individuals to represent Texas in the United States Senate.
Samuel Houston had also served as sixth governor Tennessee of the Republic of Texas and the only American to be elected governor of two different states in the United States. In the year 1859, he was elected as a governor of Texas but was removed from office after the secession of Texas in 1861. Houston was a leading voice against sectional agitation. Although an unapologetic slave owner, Houston, like his mentor Jackson, insisted that the Union in all cases is preserved.
This commemorative stamp was issued by the United States of America in the year 1964 to commemorate him.
