British Stamps Honor Six Classic Science Fiction Novels

21 Apr 2021  Wed

Great Britain’s Royal Mail pays tribute to classic science fiction literature on six stamps issued April 15. Britain has been at the forefront of science fiction writing, and the writers whose work is featured on the stamps are household names the world over. The stamps, which are in three se-tenant pairs, show specially commissioned illustrations representing six science fiction novels by British authors.

The writers and their works honoured are Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and H.G. Wells's The Time Machine on the pair of non-denominated first-class stamps; Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and John Wyndham’s The Day of the Triffids on the two Euro1.70 stamps; and Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End and Doris Lessing’s Shikasta on the Euro 2.55 stamps.

Two anniversaries are in conjunction with this issue: the 75th death anniversary of Wells and the 70th anniversary of the publication of Wyndham’s The Day of the Triffids.
