Alexander Nevsky was the Prince of Novgorod and then the grand prince of Vladimir. He also served as Grand Prince of Kyiv and Grand Prince of Vladimir during some of the most difficult times in Kievan Rus' history.
Alexander Nevsky was the son of laroslav Vsevolodovich, Prince of Pereiaslavl and Novgorod. In 1236, when his father laraslav Vsevolodovich moved to Kyiv, Alexander Nevsky succeeded him as a Prince of Novgorod. In 1239 Alexander got married to a daughter of Prince of Polotsk.
In 1240, when Sweden invaded Russia, he defeated Sweden at the confluence of the Rivers Izhora and Neva.
Alexander Nevsky died in 1263, his remembered for his heroic role and his never-ending efforts to alleviate the Mongol yoke. His heroic defence of Russia and Orthodoxy in the west, and his deeply felt Christianity.
