Pope John Paul II, Latin name Johannes Paul, he was born as Karol Jozef Wojtyla. He made history in the year 1978 by becoming the first non-Italian pope in more than 400 years. He served as the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City state from 1987 until he died in 2005. He was elected as a pope by the second papal conclave of 1978, which was called after John Paul I, who had been elected in August to succeed Pope Paul VI, died after 33 days. After getting elected as a pope he tried to improve Catholic Church's relations with Judaism, Islam, and the Eastern Orthodox Church. He was one of the most travelled world leaders in history, visiting 129 countries during his pontificate.

This commemorative stamp was issued by Tuvalu to commemorate him in the year 2013.
