Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve Quarter Dollar

2021-02-10 Wed

The United States of America issued this commemorative quarter coin with the theme of Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in the year 2020. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is a National preserve located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas, north of Strong City. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve encompasses nearly around 11,000 acres and is located in the heart of the Flint Hills–the largest expanse of tallgrass prairie left in North America. It is the only unit of the National Park Service dedicated to the rich, natural history of the tallgrass prairie.

The obverse of this quarter dollar depicts the portrait of the first president of the United States of America, George Washington, facing towards the left. The reverse of this coin depicts a skyward view of a Regal Fritillary butterfly against a backdrop of Big Bluestem and Indian grasses, iconic to Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.
