Birth Anniversary of Former Prime Minister of India- Shri Chandra Shekhar

Chandra Shekhar was a politician and legislator, who served as prime minister of India from November 1990 to June 1991.

Also remembered as a “Young Turk” for his conviction and courage, Chandra Shekhar was born on 1st July 1927 in Uttar Pradesh. After pursued Master’s degree in Political Science from Allahabad University, he joined the socialist movement in the early 1950s.

Chandra was closely associated with Acharya Narendra Dev, a fiery Socialist leader and was appointed as General Secretary of the Praja Socialist Party. In 1962, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh.

He has established Bharat Yatra Centres in various parts of the country to train social and political workers for mass education. He was known for enduring by the parliamentary conventions and was honor with the inaugural Outstanding Parliamentarian Award in 1995.

A 500 Paisa (5 Rupee) commemorative postage stamp was issued by India Post to honor this great leader in 2010.
