2016-05-12 Thu
Seven new denominations of banknotes and eight denominations of coins, including 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 rubles along with the denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 kopeks and 1 and 2 rubles, will be introduced by Belarus starting July 2016. The notes belong to the “Belarus is my country” theme which is the third money series for the central Bank of Belarus since 1992.The notes will bear the signature of Petr P. Prokopovich, chairman of the board of the bank at the time they were originally minted. When the new notes are introduced, the existing 2000 series will be circulating along with the new 2009 series. The 2000 series will be phased out in five years. In December 2021, the 2000 series will be demonetized and the 500 ruble note will become the highest denomination.
The notes are being issued to improve monetary circulation and reduce costs incurred while servicing cash in circulation.
