The 5 francs banknote issued by the Bank of France in the year 1916 is also known as the zodiac Banknote. 5 French francs Black "Noir" is a French banknote issued by the Bank of France following the law of 29 December 1871. It is the first French 5 franc banknote.

The nickname "Zodiac" comes from two 12 zodiacal signs that marked the front, in the middle of the serial number, the different months of emissions. This banknote is the work of painter Camille Chazal and the engraving is done by Dujardin.

The banknote is a beautiful blue in the white specimen that has an intricate design of flowers, leaves and geometrical design on both obverse and reverse. The obverse features allegorical figures of Force, Work, and Fortune on either side of the central panel which has the denomination value, Promissory Note, signatures of authorities.

The reverse, on the other hand, has the watermark window in the center surrounded by a beautiful design. The watermark is a white woman's head in profile with the words "Banque de France" below. The denomination value in the numeral is seen on the four corners of the note.
