Gold Half-Pagoda of Krishnadevaraya

Vijaynagar Empire was one of the most important kingdoms of medieval India. This kingdom was established during the 14th century and had ruled for almost three centuries. This kingdom was founded by two brothers namely Harihara and Bukka in the year 1336 CE. This entire empire was ruled by four dynasties namely Sangama Dynasty, Saluva Dynasty, Tuluva Dynasty, Aravidu Dynasty.

Krishnadevaraya was one of the rulers of the Vijaynagar Empire. He was the third ruler of the Tuluva Dynasty that sat on the throne of the Vijaynagar Empire in the year 1509 CE and ruled it till 1529 CE. He is considered one of the greatest rulers of this empire. The period of his reign was one of the gloomiest periods in the history of the Vijaynagar Empire.

This gold half pagoda which weighs around 1.6g was issued by Krinadevaya during his period of reign in the Vijaynagar Empire. The obverse of this coin depicts seated Balakrishna with a flat headdress, flanked by conch shell and chakra. The reverse of this coin is inscribed with the legend Sri Pratapa Krishna Raya’.
