Piece of Mercury on Coin issued by Mint of Poland
2016-05-10 Tue
Mint of Poland recently issued an extremely unique coin for the island country of Niue which has a real piece of meteorite from the planet Mercury. The Ultra High Relief 1-ounce .999 fine silver dollar with antique yellow finish features a convex reverse and a flat obverse. The surfaces of the coin recreate the appearance of the planet brilliantly and are even tinted yellow to give the planet’s colour.
Mercury is the smallest planet and closest to the Sun. It orbits around the sun in about 88 Earth days, faster than any other planet in the Solar System. It is named after the Roman messenger to the gods, Mercury.
Mercury has many craters and looks like moon which means that it has been geologically inactive for billions of years.
The coin costs $219.90 and has a mintage limit of 686 pieces.
