Issued on 22nd Oct, the Star of Bethlehem stamp of Portugal is the world’s first postage stamp with an LED.

The second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew (King James Version) begins with these two verses: “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, “Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.”

The souvenir sheet is part of Portugal’s Oct. 22 Christmas issue, which also includes €0.53, €0.86 and €0.91 stamps. Each stamp shows one of the three wise men, also known as the Magi, and a camel. Jorge Macedo designed the stamps and souvenir sheet and the light-emitting diode that is activated by cell phone.
