Rudolf Maister Day of Slovenia
2019-11-23 Sat
Since 2005, the national holiday in honor of the Slovenian general, who played an important role in the history of the country, is celebrated annually on 23 November. On this day in 1918, the general of the Austro-Hungarian army, a native of a Slovenian family, Rudolf Maister together with his army disarmed and disbanded the German guards. Thanks to his decisive measures, he retained much of the Slovenian national territory of Carinthia and Styria, which at that time belonged to Yugoslavia.
The liberation of Maribor was of strategic importance in the formation of the territory of modern Slovenia. The military actions strengthened the borders in the North. Thereby, it became possible to further conquer the Slovenian cities (Ptuj, Celje, and Ljutomer).
In the year 1999, Slovenia Post issued a series of “Prominent Personalities”. The 70 - Slovenian tolar stamp depicts a facing portrait of Rudolf Maister with a map in the background. The left panel is inscribed with the name of the country, the denomination value and the name of the personality.
