2019-10-09 Wed

Every year on October 9, World Post Day is celebrated around the world - the day on which the Universal Postal Union (UPU) was established in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland.

Postal systems have been in operation for many centuries. From the back way back in history, people sent letters to each other. These were delivered on foot or on horseback by special messengers. With the issuance of first postage stamp “Penny Black” the new postal system bloomed.

Slowly countries agreed to exchange mail internationally, but it was slow and complicated. The UPU was the start of the global communications revolution, introducing the ability to write to others all over the world. The birth of the UPU in 1874 opened the way for the efficient postal service in existence today.

October 9th was first declared World Post Day at the 1969 UPU Congress in Tokyo, Japan. The proposal was submitted by Shri Anand Mohan Narula, a member of the Indian delegation. Since then, World Post Day has been celebrated all over the world to highlight the importance of postal services. Countries all over the world take part in celebrations to highlight the importance of the postal service.

The coin shown above is issued in the year 2004 to commemorate the 150 years of India Post. A set of two coins were issued with the denominations of R1. 1 and Rs.150. The coin depicts the emblem on the obverse and the logo of India post and the inscription “INDIA POST 150 YEARS” in both Devanagari and Roman.
