2019-10-05 Sat

The Indonesian National Armed Forces Day, otherwise known as Hari Tentara Nasional Indonesia, is a national day of Indonesia that is celebrated on 5 October, the day of the foundation of the People's Security Armed Forces in 1945.

The history of present-day Indonesian Armed Forces is directly related to the Indonesian independence movement. In August 1945, Sukarno proclaimed the independence of Indonesia. However, the Netherlands tried to re-establish its rule over Indonesia which led to an armed conflict known as the Indonesian National Revolution.

On October 5, 1945, Sukarno formed the People's Security Army (TKR) in order to defend Indonesia from the Dutch and their allies. This day is considered the birthday of Indonesia's Armed Forces. In 1947, the armed forces gained their current name, Tentara Nasional Indonesia.

The date of October 5 was chosen for the National Armed Forces Day in honor of the 1945 establishment of Southeast Asia's 5th oldest regular and standing armed forces per a government decree of the nascent Republic. Indonesian Armed Forces Day is celebrated with impressive military displays held throughout the country, formal receptions and other events.

On the occasion of the 52nd Armed Force day, the Post Indonesia issued a set of three stamps. The 300 Indonesian rupiah stamp depicts Jayamahe monument which is a statue of an Indonesian Navy officer wearing Ceremonial Service Dress, complete with his sword of honor. It represents the preparedness of the Indonesian Navy for glory. The statue is located at Port of Tanjung Perak, Surabaya, Indonesia.
