Admiral Byrd's name has virtually become synonymous with the identity of a polar explorer. In November 1928 Admiral Byrd began his first expedition to the Antarctic.

Since the very beginning, Man was always curious to explore the unknown! Polar explorations during the late 1920s confirm this fact. The two subsequent years 1927 and 1928 marked with the successful expeditions to both the tips of the earth.

In 1927, Admiral Byrd and his co-pilot, Floyd Bennett became the first explorers to successfully fly over the North Pole. A year later, Admiral Richard Byrd began his first expedition to the Antarctic. Driven by the idea to explore the yet untouched land of far south, Admiral Byrd sought out to the southernmost tip of the planet!

Even though the mission faced with difficulties and many questions were left unanswered the expedition entered Byrd into the history books. The Byrd’s explorations of Antarctic were commemorated by a couple of postage stamps.

In the year of 1933 a postage stamp with the denomination of 3 cents was issued which was President Roosevelt's first of several designs for postage stamps.

On the other hand, a 25 cent stamp was issued in 1988 on the Birth Centenary of Admiral Byrd. The stamp depicts the portrait of Admiral Byrd with the location of the south pole and the plane.
