Extremely Fine Circa 303 to 293 B.C. Silver Hexadrachm Sold for Double its Estimate

The market for ancient Greek coins is booming considerably, especially the coins which are in superb condition. A circa 303 to 293 B.C. silver hexadrachm, in EF, fetched more than twice its estimate in the Nomos sale in Zurich on 7th October and was sold for 150,000 Swiss francs.Silver hexadrachm of Pantikapaion are famous for their depiction of the god associated with the wild – the bearded Pan.
Pantikapaion is a city in the Cimmerian Bosporus, which today falls under Russia and Ukraine. The denomination worth six drachms is very rare and features a design which is similar to other known coins of Pantikapaion. Experts state that the same engraver must have created all of them.
