The Royal Australian Mint has launched a new look 50 cent coin to celebrate 90 years of ‘The Ghan’ train. The new coin and exciting competition celebrate one of Australia’s most famous railway journeys.
The Ghan or the Afghan Express steam train commenced its first route. Now known as The Ghan, the Journey beyond Rail Expeditions route has expanded from Adelaide in South Australia through Alice Springs, all the way to Darwin. The Ghan is a national icon and celebrating 90 years of adventure across the country is a significant achievement.
A new colored 50 cent coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint which depicts the train in a bold red background – like the countryside the rail treks through with the denomination value 50 on the top and the inscription “The Ghan 1929 – 2019” at the bottom.
With the launch of the new coin also comes a competition to win two tickets for the transcontinental journey!
