Doug Murray Large-size Notes Collection

2019-05-21 Tue

On 26th May, Heritage Auctions would be offering interesting examples of US paper money from the Doug Murray Collection online. Some of the highlights include the $1, $2, $5, and $10 legal tender notes of 1862 and 1863. Almost 36 large-size mules are also being offered, 16 of which are Series 1899 “Black Eagle” $1 silver certificates.

Mules are generally found on small-size currency when plate numbers of different sizes are used on the obverse and reverse. Mules on large-size notes started appearing after Frank White became treasurer in 1921. New back plates were made at that time and the location of the plate numbers was changed. Notes with signature combinations of Elliott-Burke, Elliott-White, and Speelman-White, feature Mules. The old and new back plates were exchanged with the face plates. New back plates are featured on Elliott-Burke mules, while the old ones are featured on mules for the other two signature combinations.

Doug Murray’s collection of Large Size Star Notes opened new opportunities for collectors who earlier looked for these varieties in small-size currency. 31 large-size star notes, including US notes, along with silver and gold certificates are also a part of this collection.
