South Dakota is one of the states of the United States of America; it is located in the Midwestern region of the United States of America. This state is named after a Native American tribe called Lakota and Dakota Sioux. This tribe is composed of a large portion of the population and historically they dominated the territory. South Dakota is bounded by Minnesota to the east, Wyoming to the west, North Dakota to the north and Nebraska to the south. This state is also bisected by Missouri river which divides South Dakota into two geographically and socially distinct halves, known to residents as "East River" and "West River".

The United States of America had issued a commemorative quarter dollar with the theme of the state of South Dakota in the year 2006. This quarter dollar is the fifth quarter dollar issued in the year 2006 and overall it is 40th quarter dollar issued in 50 States Quarters Program. The reverse of this coin depicts Mount Rushmore National Memorial, a sculpture of four US presidents namely George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, and the image of Pheasant.
