Effigy Mounds National Monuments was established in the United States of America in the year 1949. This park protects one of the largest remaining concentrations of ancient American Indian earthworks in the United States. This park also preserves more than 200 prehistoric mounds built by Native Americans.
Numerous effigy mounds are shaped like animals, including bears and birds. These were built mostly in the first millennium, by peoples of the Woodland Culture. The majority of the mounds were constructed before one thousand and two thousand years.
The United States of America had issued a commemorative quarter dollar with the theme of Effigy Mounds National Monument in the year 2017. The reverse of this coin depicts an aerial view of mounds in the Marching Bear Group.
