Ghiyas al-din Iwaz Shah was the ruler of Bengal Sultanate. He ruled Bengal for two different years. His first reign ranges from 1208CE till 1210CE and his second reign ranges from 1212 CE till 1227 CE.During 1208 CE he assumed the power of Bengal for the first time and ruled Bengal for two years until he was overthrown by Ali Mardan Khalji in the year 1210 CE. After the death of Ali Mardan Khalji in the year 1210 CE, once again he gains the power of and at this time he ruled for almost 15 years.
In these 15 years of his reign, he had established peace in Bengal. He had also transferred his capital from Devkot to Gaur and had also tried to prepare a powerful navy. He carried out invasions into neighboring regions and made Vanga (Easter Bengal), Kamarupa (Assam), Tirhut (Northern Bihar) and Utkala (Northern Orissa) his tributary states.
This horseman type silver tanka issued by Ghiyas Al-Din Iwaz Shah in the name of Shams-ud-din Iltutmish is listed for INR 45,000 in the upcoming auction of Todywalla which will be held in Mumbai on 20th April 2019.
