A Part of France in North America

2019-04-01 Mon

The 1962 airmail stamp of St. Pierre and Miquelon depicts the only area in continental North America currently controlled by France.

Saint Pierre and Miquelon is a self-governing territorial overseas collectivity of France, situated in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean near the Canadian province of Newfoundland. It is the only part of New France that remains under French control.

This 1962 airmail stamp shows the location of St. Pierre and Miquelon (within the red circle) off the southern coast of Newfoundland. The stamp commemorates the 20th anniversary of the liberation of the islands during World War II. The stamp also depicts a French Marine with the flag of France on it. The name of the country is at the top.

This stamp is the only stamp showing a small piece of France in North America.
