The second release from Pobjoy Mint’s five-coin series called “Big Five” African animals, features a lion. The high relief coins have been issued for Sierra Leone. The reverse side depicts the head of a Lion and is designed like an African mask. An African pattern, common to all coins in the series, can be seen on the incused rim. Struck on 2 oz Silver, the 62.21 grams coin has a diameter of 50 millimetres and a mintage limit of 500 pieces. The coin comes in a specially designed acrylic box with an outer printed sleeve that contains the Certificate of Authenticity.Lions are the world’s second largest cats which can grow up to 3.3 meters in length and weight up to 25 kilos. They mostly sleep during the day and become active at night when they are hunting for their prey. The ‘Big Five’ animals of Africa include Elephants, Lions, Leopards, Rhinos and Buffalos. Many years ago, they were considered to be the most dangerous animals to hunt. Today, a lot of conservation efforts are being taken to protect these wonderful animals. National parks in South Africa not only provide a protective area for tourists to watch these animals but are also trying to protect the natural habitats for these endangered species.
