Today on this day in 1977, Ayillyyath Kuttiari Gopalan, a freedom fighter, social reformer, and Marxist leader, passed away in Trivandrum. He is remembered as an outstanding leader of communist movement in Kerala.AKG was born on 1st October 1904 in Cannanore district of northern Kerala and educated in Tellichery. In 1927 he joined the Indian National Congress and later on he became member of the Communist Party of India.
He was an active participant of many socialist and independence movements and campaigns such as the Khilafat Movement, Khadi Movement. He suffered imprisonment for participating in the Salt Satyagraha
He continued his struggle for upliftment of the downtrodden particularly Harijan. To honor this great leader India Postal Department has issued 1 Rupee commemorative postage stamp in 1990.
