Known as the Independence Issue, The first stamps of Kiribati were a pair issued on 19 November 1979 to mark the independence of the country.
The Republic of Kiribati is an island nation located in the central tropical Pacific Ocean. Kiribati was formerly the Gilbert Islands, part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands which split into Kiribati and Tuvalu upon gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1978 and 1979.
The Gilbert Islands gained independence as the Republic of Kiribati on 12 July 1979 which marked the era of indigenous stamps of the country. A couple of months later the Republic of Kiribati issued its independence issue.
A pair of two stamps was issued with the denominations of 10 Kiribati cent and 45 Kiribati cents. The 10 cents stamp depicts the national flag and the 45 cents stamp depicts House of Parliament and House of Assembly.
