Kiribati issued a set of 4 stamps on 28th November 1979 to celebrate the International Year of the Child.

A set of four stamps were issued on the occasion. The stamps are in form of watercolor paintings and come with the denomination 10 cents, 20 cents, 45 cents and 1 dollar. The stamps depict Boy and Clam Shell, Boy Climbing Palm Tree, Girl Reading Book and Boy wearing Garlands respectively.

The children are depicted wearing traditional local costumes. The name of the country is seen at the top centre flanked by the denomination value and Coat of Arms of Kiribati. The stamps are inscribed with “International Year of the Child 1979” at the left and the IYC emblem on right.

Coincidently, Kiribati's year of Independence and the Proclamation of International Year of the Child by UNESCO falls on the same. The proclamation was signed on January 1, 1979, by United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim and Kiribati became an Independent nation in July 1979.
