Coins of Sharabhapuriya Dynasty
2018-04-04 Wed
Sharabhapuriya dynasty ruled the regions of Chhattisgarh and Odisha during 500 to 600 CE. The first ruler of this dynasty was Sharabha. They probably were the Gupta vassals in the early days and later became independent. They are known to us from their copper plate inscriptions and few coins. Coins of Sharabhapuriya dynasty are very notable because of their minting repousse technique. So far the coins we have found are issued in gold and are unifaced. The featured two gold coins are few of them; the obverse of it depicts a Garuda flanked with a conch shell and wheel, with sun and crescent on either of the sides, Brahmi legend ‘Sri Prasannamatra’, kalash below and all within the dotted border of the circle.
These coins are seen in the Todywalla Auction No 115 (Part 1), grab it before it falls in someone else’s hand.
Mintage World will soon upload the Sharabhapuriya coinage. Till then keep exploring our website.
