2016-02-11 Thu

The Central Bank of Argentina is all set to issue notes of the highest denomination ever in the country’s political history. The bank announced that new 200 pesos and 500 pesos, 1,000-peso notes will be put into circulation. Apart from that, new designs of the 20-, 50- and 100-peso notes will also start circulating in 2017.

Each of the bills will have on the obverse a mammal, bird or fish which are commonly found in the Argentine region, while the reverse will feature the scenic characteristic of the depicted creature’s habitat. The theme celebrates the country’s native bounty while also conveying that preserving and promoting biodiversity is extremely important. By introducing these new designs and getting rid of historical characters, the Central Bank is trying to depoliticize its money and make it more representative of the entire nation.

The 200-peso note will have a southern right whale, the 500-peso note will show a jaguar, the 2017 1,000-peso note will have the national bird, a hornero, the 100-peso note will have a taruca, or north Andean deer, the 50-peso issue will feature an Andean condor and the 20-peso note will have a guanco.
