General Antonio Luna Honoured on Philippine Coins

The 150th Birth anniversary of Gen. Antonio Luna was celebrated with the release of special commemorative 10-peso coin by the Philippines. 10 million coins were released on 24th November at various important BSP offices. BSP branches all over the country will be releasing the coins from December 2017.The obverse features a portrait of Luna along with inscriptions "Republika ng Pilipinas", "Heneral Antonio Luna," the denomination, mintmark and the general’s signature. The reverse features inscriptions "dangal," "tapang," "dignidad," "bayani ng digmaan sa Estados Unidos, 1899," a picture of Luna on horseback, the ornamental shoulder piece for the general’s rank of brigadier general, "150 taon," a design from a paper with the title La Independencia and inkwell, "1866-2016," "Heneral Antonio Luna," the BSP seal and micro letters "sampung piso."
The patriot, soldier, scientist, and journalist was a member of the propaganda movement. He wrote for La Solidaridad under the pseudonym Taga-Ilog. He also started the La Independencia newspaper after he returned to the country in 1898.
The brave and aggressive General was known for his military tactics. He went on to become the commander of the Philippine Revolutionary Army. On 5th June 1899, he was killed in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija.
