Known for making the classical art form - Ghazal popular in India, Jagjit Singh has also rendered his voice to many folk as well as film songs. He was the pioneer to give more relevance to poetry that was loved among the masses and compose music which emphasised on the meaning of words and the melody evoked by them. He earned critical acclaim as well as commercial success through his compositions for famous films like Prem Geet (1981), Arth and Saath Saath (1982), and TV serials Mirza Ghalib (1988) and Kahkashan (1991). With a career spanning five decades and over 80 albums to his credit, the volume of his quality work has been regarded as genre-defining and path breaking.
A set of two commemorative stamps worth Rs 5 and Rs 20 were issued by India in the year 2014 by the then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, for his notable contributions to Indian music and the classical art form – Ghazals.
Time to sit back and listen to one of his soothing numbers, maybe “Hosh walon ko khabar kya..” from the film Sarfarosh.
